The Body Knows: Listening to Your Physical Wisdom

April 28, 2026

Unlock your innate power. Your body holds a lifetime of wisdom, ready to guide you toward vibrant well-being.

Your body knows. It holds the blueprint to your healing, your joy, and your deepest truths. For too long, we've been taught to override its signals, to push through discomfort, to live from the neck up. But the truth is, your physical wisdom is your most reliable compass.

I spent years in my head. As a psychotherapist, I was an expert in mental landscapes, in narrative and pattern. Yet, I was often completely disconnected from my own body. I ignored the whispers, then the shouts, of exhaustion, unease, and pain. I rationalized it all away. Productivity, responsibility, keeping up appearances – these were my gods.

The Body's Unspoken Language

There was a period in my late 40s when my body finally demanded my attention. My practice was thriving, my children were teenagers, and my marriage was a masterclass in polite avoidance. I was perpetually tired, but I blamed age, life's demands, the endless to-do list. Then came the migraines. Not just headaches, but debilitating, vision-blurring, nausea-inducing attacks that would fell me for days. My doctor offered stress as the culprit and medication as the solution. I took the pills, hoping to silence the alarm.

But the migraines were relentless. One afternoon, after a particularly vicious episode left me crumpled on the bathroom floor, something shifted. It wasn't a sudden epiphany. It was a persistent, gentle nudge. I stopped asking, "What's wrong with me?" and started asking, "What is my body trying to tell me?" It felt almost rebellious to even consider.

Unpacking the Clues in Your System

I started to pay attention. Really pay attention. I noticed my shoulders creeping up to my ears when I felt overwhelmed. My stomach knotting into a tight ball before a difficult conversation. A dull ache in my lower back coinciding precisely with feelings of being unsupported. It was like learning a new language, spoken not in words, but in sensations.

The migraines, I eventually understood, were a desperate plea for me to slow down. To set boundaries. To acknowledge the immense emotional burden I was carrying. They were a physical manifestation of an identity I had outgrown, a life that no longer nourished my soul, even as I was trying my best to nourish everyone else’s. My body was screaming for me to reclaim my story, to step into my own sovereignty.

This wasn't about "fixing" myself. It was about listening. It was about giving my body the respect and attention it deserved, not as a machine to be maintained, but as a wise elder, a trusted confidante. This is how you begin to heal. This is how you reclaim your peace.

Your Body: Your Most Honest Intuition

For so many of us women over 45, we’ve spent decades putting others first, ignoring our own needs, and dismissing our physical discomforts as just "part of aging." We’ve been taught to push through, to be strong, to deny our vulnerability. But what if that strength lies not in enduring, but in truly feeling?

Your body is an exquisite instrument. It's constantly collecting data, processing emotions, and sending you signals about what serves you and what diminishes you. That unexplained fatigue? It might be calling for rest, yes, but also for a re-evaluation of your commitments. That persistent tension in your neck? It could be holding the weight of unspoken resentments or unexpressed creativity. That sudden burst of energy after a certain conversation? It's a clear indicator that you're aligning with your truth.

This isn't woo-woo. This is biology, psychology, and ancient wisdom woven into the fabric of your being. When you start to tune in, you’ll discover that your body holds a treasure trove of information about your desires, your boundaries, and your deepest truths. It knows what brings you joy, what drains your energy, and what truly makes you feel alive.

So, I invite you to pause. Take a deep breath. Place a hand on your heart, or on your belly. And just ask: What is my body trying to tell me right now? Don't judge the answer. Just notice it. Let it be the beginning of a profound conversation, a journey back to the undeniable wisdom that resides within you. Because when you truly start listening to your physical wisdom, you’re not just healing your body; you’re reclaiming your entire life. You’re stepping into your sovereign rise.
